Interaction between Dislocations and Grain Boundaries: In crystalline materials, a dislocation is a kind of line defect, and its movement leads to the plastic deformation of the material. When a dislocation moves within a crystal and approaches a grain boundary, it will be impeded by the grain boundary. The irregular atomic arrangement at the grain boundary makes it difficult for dislocations to move as smoothly as they do inside the grain. For example, in metallic materials such as steel, dislocations pile up at the grain boundaries, just like a group of people encountering a wall (the grain boundary) and cannot easily move forward. This impeding effect enhances the material's ability to resist plastic deformation, thereby increasing the material's yield strength and tensile strength.

Obstruction of Cracks by Grain Boundaries: Grain - boundary piling - up not only affects dislocation movement but also has an important impact on crack propagation. When a crack is generated in a material and spreads around, the grain boundary will become an obstacle to crack propagation.
