For oil tankers, since they mainly transport liquid petroleum products, the oil tank bulkheads need to withstand huge liquid static pressure. The thickness of the steel plates is determined according to factors such as the density of the transported petroleum and the height of the oil tanks. For example, for very large crude carriers (VLCC) that transport high-density crude oil and have large oil tanks, the oil tank bulkheads may require steel plates with a thickness of 30 - 50mm to prevent deformation and rupture. However, for small oil tankers that transport light oil products, the required thickness of the steel plates may be relatively lower.

Stress Analysis

 

Engineers will conduct detailed finite element analysis on the ship structure. During this process, the ship is divided into many small elements, and the stress conditions of each element under various loads (such as cargo weight, wave impact force, static water pressure, etc.) are calculated through computer simulation. Based on the stress distribution results, the required thickness of the steel plates for different parts is determined. For example, at the hatch corner area, the stress concentration phenomenon is obvious, and it is calculated that thicker steel plates are needed here to resist deformation.

 

For the hull shell, different positions are subjected to different pressures and tensile forces. The bottom of the ship mainly bears the vertical pressure, while the side of the ship may simultaneously bear the lateral wave pressure and the longitudinal tensile force. Based on the magnitude and direction of these forces, a reasonable thickness of the steel plates is calculated to ensure that the hull structure works within the safety factor range.
