Basic Principle
For the KA56 steel plate, carbon is one of the most important strengthening elements. In the microstructure of steel, carbon mainly exists in the form of interstitial atoms in the iron lattice. As the carbon content increases, the hardness of the steel will gradually increase. This is because carbon can impede the movement of dislocations. Dislocations are a kind of line defect in crystals, and the plastic deformation of metals is mainly realized through the movement of dislocations. When the carbon content increases, more carbon atoms will pin the dislocations, making it more difficult for the dislocations to move under stress, thus increasing the material's resistance to deformation, that is, increasing the hardness.

 

Specific Influence Stages
Low - carbon Content Stage (Carbon content is below a certain value, such as around 0.2%): At this stage, as the carbon content increases, the hardness of the KA56 steel plate rises gently. At this time, carbon mainly exists in the form of a solid solution in ferrite, forming an interstitial solid solution. For example, as the carbon content increases from 0.1% to 0.2%, the hardness may rise from around HB100 to around HB120 (the hardness values here are only examples, and the actual hardness values vary due to factors such as the specific steel composition and processing technology).


 


High - carbon Content Stage (Carbon content is higher than 0.6%): The hardness continues to increase, but the rate of increase may slow down. Because the carbon content is already high at this time, a large number of carbides are formed, and the toughness of the steel will decrease significantly. Moreover, excessive carbides may aggregate and grow. For example, when the carbon content reaches 0.8%, the hardness may reach around HB220. However, an excessively high carbon content will deteriorate the machinability of the steel and is prone to quenching cracks and other defects, affecting the actual performance of the KA56 steel plate.
