The thickness of LR AH32 Steel Plate has a significant impact on its mechanical properties, as detailed below:

Yield Strength

 

Generally, the specified minimum yield strength for LR AH32 steel plate is ≥ 315 MPa regardless of thickness within the typical applicable range. However, in practice, thicker plates might have a slightly lower actual yield strength compared to thinner ones. This is because the cooling rate during the manufacturing process is slower for thicker sections, which can lead to coarser grain structures. Coarser grains can reduce the material's resistance to plastic deformation to some extent, causing the yield strength to be closer to the minimum specified value or even slightly below it in some cases. For example, a 5 mm thick LR AH32 plate might have a yield strength closer to the upper end of the allowable range in normal production conditions, while a 50 mm thick plate could have a yield strength nearer to the minimum requirement.

 

Tensile Strength

 

The tensile strength of LR AH32 steel plate is specified to be in the range of 440 - 570 MPa. Thicker plates tend to have a lower tensile strength within this range compared to thinner ones. The reason is similar to that for yield strength; the slower cooling rate in thick plates results in larger grain sizes and different microstructural characteristics. These factors can affect the material's ability to withstand tensile forces and cause the tensile strength to be relatively lower. Elongation

 

Elongation is an important indicator of the steel's ductility. As the thickness of the LR AH32 steel plate increases, the elongation percentage typically decreases. Thicker plates have more internal inhomogeneities and larger grain structures due to the manufacturing process, which restrict the material's ability to deform uniformly under tensile stress. As a result, they are less able to stretch and show lower elongation values. For example, a thin LR AH32 plate with a thickness of around 6 mm might have an elongation percentage close to the upper limit of the standard requirement, say around 25%, while a thick plate with a thickness of 80 mm could have an elongation percentage closer to the minimum required value, perhaps around 22%.

 

Impact Toughness

 

Impact toughness is crucial for withstanding sudden dynamic loads. Thicker LR AH32 steel plates usually have lower impact toughness compared to thinner ones. The slower cooling rate in thick sections leads to coarser grain structures and potentially the formation of microstructural defects. These factors make the steel more prone to brittle fracture when subjected to impact forces, especially at low temperatures. For example, at 0°C, a thin plate might be able to absorb a relatively large amount of impact energy, easily meeting or exceeding the specified minimum impact energy requirements. In contrast, a thick plate might struggle to reach the minimum required impact energy value and could be at a higher risk of brittle failure under the same impact conditions.
