Vibration Stress Relief (VSR) Introduction
Vibration stress relief (VSR) is a technological method to eliminate the residual stress of metal components through vibration. It utilizes the principle of resonance to make the workpiece vibrate at a certain frequency, so that the residual stress inside the material can be relaxed and homogenized.

 

Effect on the Strength of LR AH40 Steel
Yield Strength: After vibration stress relief treatment, the yield strength of LR AH40 steel may be improved. This is because during the vibration process, crystal defects such as dislocations inside the material move and rearrange. For example, the release and redistribution of residual stress cause the dislocation movement to be more reasonably hindered when the material is under force, so a higher stress is required to make the material plastically deform, thus increasing the yield strength.
Tensile Strength: Under normal circumstances, appropriate vibration stress relief treatment will not significantly reduce the tensile strength. Moreover, if the treatment is proper, due to the optimization of the internal material structure, such as grain refinement (in some cases) or the improvement of phase distribution, it also has a certain positive impact on the tensile strength. Effect on the Toughness of LR AH40 Steel
Vibration stress relief treatment can improve the toughness of LR AH40 steel. Residual stress acts as a stress concentration source in the material. After vibration stress relief treatment, the degree of stress concentration is reduced. For example, under impact loading, the treated material can better absorb energy and reduce the rapid propagation of cracks. Because the elimination of residual stress makes the internal microstructure of the material more stable, when subjected to impact, defects such as dislocations will not quickly gather to form cracks due to stress concentration, thus improving the toughness of the material.

 

Effect on the Fatigue Performance of LR AH40 Steel
It has an obvious improvement effect on fatigue performance. In the process of cyclic loading, residual stress is one of the important factors that lead to the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks. Vibration stress relief treatment reduces the sources of fatigue cracks by eliminating and homogenizing the residual stress. For example, when mechanical parts are subjected to alternating stress, LR AH40 steel components treated by vibration stress relief can extend the fatigue life. Because after vibration treatment, the stress state on the surface and inside of the material is more uniform, and under alternating stress, it is not easy to produce excessive stress concentration in local areas, thus reducing the probability of fatigue crack generation.
