Products Description

The construction history of oil tankers has gone through multiple stages of development and transformation:

Early exploration stage (before the mid-19th century):
In the early days, people mainly used wooden barrels and iron barrels to transport vegetable oil, whale oil, crude oil, etc., and then transported them by ship. This method not only increases transportation costs because the weight and volume of barrels occupy a large amount of space, but also barrels may be damaged during transportation, leading to oil leakage.

Emergence of modern tanker prototype stage (1877 - 1886):
In 1877, Norway built the world's first ship dedicated to transporting oil, the "Lindesnaes", ending the history of transporting oil in wooden and iron barrels and marking the beginning of the development of oil tankers.
In 1886, the "Gluckauf" tanker built by the United Kingdom for Germany was of great significance. The ship is 97 meters long and has a deadweight of 2,307 tons. The cargo hold is divided into 14 compartments and connected by a pump and piping system. It can load and unload oil by its own pump and piping. It is the first bulk tanker with modern tanker characteristics and mainly undertakes the task of transporting American oil to Europe. In the year before it was built, 99% of the oil transported from the United States to Europe was in barrels. After it was built, 99% of the oil transported to Europe was quickly changed to bulk transportation.

Stage of scale expansion and technological development (early 20th century - mid-20th century):
At the beginning of the 20th century, the scale of oil tankers continued to expand. In 1913, the steam tanker "Sanfraterno" built by the United Kingdom was 160.7 meters long and had a deadweight of 11,929 tons, becoming the largest tanker in the world at that time. In the following years, oil tankers with larger deadweight continued to appear, such as the "Sanjeronimo" in 1914 (deadweight 12,398 tons) and the "C.O.Stillman" tanker built by Germany in 1928 (deadweight 23,060 tons).
During World War II, countries mainly focused on manufacturing warships and mature oil tankers, and the research and development of larger oil tankers slowed down.

Stage of large-scale competition (1950s - 1960s):
In 1953, the oil tanker "Tinaonassis" with a deadweight of 45,270 tons was launched in Hamburg, Germany, becoming the largest tanker at that time.
In 1956, the Second Middle East War broke out and the Suez Canal was closed. The sea route for oil tankers from the Persian Gulf to Europe had to detour around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. The Cape of Good Hope has strong winds and huge waves all year round. Only large oil tankers can pass safely, and the unit cost of transporting oil by large oil tankers is lower. These factors have prompted countries to be keen on building large oil tankers and entered a period of large-scale competition of "catching up with each other". In 1959, Japan built the "Universe Apollo" with a length of 288 meters and became the world's first tanker exceeding 100,000 tons (deadweight 104,520 tons). In December 1966, the "Idemitsumaru" tanker exceeded the critical value of 200,000 deadweight tons for the first time (209,413 tons), giving birth to the concept of "VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier)".

China's tanker development stage:
In the 1950s, the China Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute independently designed and completed the first 4,500-ton coastal oil tanker, marking that China's oil tankers entered the stage of independent research and development.
After reform and opening up, China's tanker design and construction technology has continuously developed, and the tanker series pedigree has gradually been enriched. In 2002, China's first 300,000-ton very large crude carrier, the "Iran Deval", was officially delivered, breaking through the high-tech long monopolized by developed countries.
In June 2019, the world's first 308,000-ton very large intelligent crude oil tanker built by CSSC Dalian Shipbuilding Group for China Merchants Energy Shipping was successfully delivered. In March 2024, the 115,000-ton new crude oil tanker "Kaimeng" undertaken by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Dalian Shipbuilding was successfully delivered.
