General Principles of Corrosion in Marine Environments

Corrosion of LR FH55 steel plate in marine environments is a complex electrochemical process. The main factors influencing corrosion include the presence of seawater, dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, and the presence of other corrosive substances such as sulfides and chlorides. Seawater is a highly conductive electrolyte, and the dissolved oxygen in it acts as a depolarizer, accelerating the corrosion process.

 

Salinity and Temperature Effects

Salinity: In areas with high salinity, such as the open ocean, the corrosion rate of LR FH55 steel plate is generally higher. The high concentration of chloride ions in seawater can penetrate the passive film (if any) on the steel surface and initiate pitting corrosion. Hydrodynamic Conditions

In areas with high - speed water flow, such as near the bow of a ship or in areas with strong tidal currents, the corrosion resistance of LR FH55 steel plate can be affected. The flowing water can continuously remove the products of corrosion from the steel surface and bring fresh oxygen - rich seawater, accelerating the corrosion process. This is known as erosion - corrosion. In contrast, in stagnant water areas, such as in some sheltered bays or the interior of ballast tanks, the corrosion may be more of a uniform type, but the lack of water movement can also lead to the accumulation of corrosive substances and the growth of biofilms, which can also impact the corrosion resistance.

 

Biofouling and Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC)

The presence of marine organisms can have a significant impact on the corrosion resistance of LR FH55 steel plate. Biofouling occurs when organisms such as barnacles, mussels, and algae attach to the steel surface. These organisms can create a micro - environment that may lead to localized corrosion. For example, the presence of sulfate - reducing bacteria in biofilms can produce sulfides, which are highly corrosive and can cause pitting and under - deposit corrosion.
