Classification Society Certification: In addition to complying with the ASTM A131 standard, these steel plates manufactured in China usually need to obtain certifications from various classification societies, such as the China Classification Society (CCS), the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), etc.

Chemical Composition

 

Grade A: The carbon content is generally below 0.21%. The manganese content ranges from 0.80% to 1.10%, and the silicon content is between 0.10% and 0.35%. The contents of harmful elements such as sulfur and phosphorus are strictly controlled.

Grade AH36: Based on Grade A, microalloying is carried out by adding a small amount of alloying elements such as niobium, vanadium, and titanium. The carbon content is generally below 0.18%. The manganese content ranges from 0.70% to 1.60%, and the silicon content is between 0.10% and 0.50%.

Grade DH36: The chemical composition is similar to that of AH36, but the control over impurity elements such as phosphorus and sulfur is more stringent. Its carbon content is generally below 0.18%. The manganese content ranges from 0.90% to 1.60%, and the silicon content is between 0.10% and 0.50%.

Mechanical Properties

 

Grade A: The yield strength is not less than 235 MPa. The tensile strength ranges from 400 MPa to 520 MPa, and the elongation is not less than 22%. It has certain toughness at normal temperature.

Grade AH36: The yield strength is not less than 355 MPa. The tensile strength ranges from 490 MPa to 620 MPa, and the elongation is not less than 17%. It has good strength and toughness and can ensure the safety of the ship's hull structure under harsh sea conditions.

Grade DH36: The yield strength is not less than 355 MPa. The tensile strength ranges from 490 MPa to 620 MPa, and the elongation is not less than 17%. It has higher requirements for impact toughness, and the Charpy V-notch impact energy at -20 °C is not less than 25 J.

Production Process

 

Steelmaking: Advanced converter or electric furnace steelmaking processes are adopted to strictly control the chemical composition and temperature of molten steel. Through refining and vacuum degassing processes, the contents of impurities and gases in steel are reduced to improve the purity of steel.

Rolling: Hot continuous rolling or controlled rolling processes are used. By controlling parameters such as rolling temperature and reduction ratio, the grain size is refined to improve the strength and toughness of steel plates.

Heat Treatment: According to different grades and customer requirements, steel plates may need to undergo heat treatment processes such as normalizing and tempering to further improve the mechanical properties and microstructure of the steel plates.
