Chemical Reaction Aspect: The main components of carbon steel are iron and carbon. During the alkaline - washing process, as the temperature rises, the reaction rate between the alkaline solution (such as sodium hydroxide solution) and iron accelerates. For example, iron reacts with hydroxide ions in the alkaline solution to form ferrous hydroxide. Due to the relatively low carbon content in carbon steel, it has a relatively small hindering effect on this reaction. Within a suitable temperature range (such as 40 - 60℃), mainly the oil and other impurities are removed, and it has little impact on the surface roughness. However, when the temperature is too high, a large amount of corrosion products such as ferrous hydroxide are generated and will accumulate on the carbon steel surface, changing its microscopic structure and increasing the surface roughness.
Micro - structural Change Aspect: The crystal structure of carbon steel is relatively simple. As the temperature rises, the thermal motion of atoms inside the carbon steel intensifies, and lattice defects increase. In an alkaline environment, chemical reactions are more likely to occur at these defect sites. For example, at the grain boundaries, due to the irregular arrangement of atoms, as the temperature rises, the alkaline solution is more likely to react with the iron atoms at these positions, leading to grain - boundary corrosion and further increasing the surface roughness. Moreover, the generated corrosion products may fill the tiny pores on the carbon steel surface, further affecting the surface morphology.

 

Alloy Steel
Effect of Alloy Elements: Alloy steel contains a variety of alloy elements, such as chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), etc. Taking chromium - containing alloy steel as an example, chromium can form a dense chromium oxide () protective film on the steel surface. At a lower temperature, this protective film is relatively stable and can effectively prevent the internal part of the steel from being corroded by the alkaline solution. However, when the temperature rises, the situation changes. For example, a too - high temperature may damage the integrity of this protective film. Because at high temperatures, the reaction rate between the protective film and the alkaline solution accelerates, which may lead to partial dissolution or cracking of the protective film. Once the protective film is damaged, the alkaline solution will react with elements such as iron inside the steel, increasing the surface roughness.
Interaction of Different Alloy Elements: Different alloy elements in alloy steel also interact with each other. For example, nickel can improve the toughness and corrosion resistance of steel. When the temperature changes, nickel cooperates with other elements (such as iron and chromium) to affect the corrosion resistance of steel. When the temperature rises, nickel - containing alloy steel may be more resistant to the corrosion of alkaline solution than carbon steel, because nickel can change the electrochemical properties of the steel surface, making the corrosion reaction less likely to occur. However, if the temperature is too high and exceeds the limit of the synergistic anti - corrosion effect of alloy elements, the surface roughness of alloy steel will also increase, but the degree and mechanism of the increase may be different from those of carbon steel. For example, alloy steel may have complex compounds generated by the reaction of alloy elements with the alkaline solution accumulated on the surface, rather than the simple corrosion products such as ferrous hydroxide as in carbon steel.

However, when the temperature rises, the stability of the passivation film will be challenged. For example, in a high - temperature alkaline solution, the passivation film may undergo a local dissolution and repair process.
