Increased Costs and Maintenance Difficulties Due to Complex Structure

 

Cost Aspect: Due to its complex structure, such as the relatively long cooling walls and special vibration devices, the manufacturing cost of the slab mold is relatively high. Compared with simple-structured molds, more investments are required in terms of material usage and processing techniques. For example, to ensure the quality and performance of the cooling walls, high-quality copper alloy materials need to be adopted, and during the processing, the layout and size of the cooling pipes need to be precisely controlled, all of which will increase the production cost.

 

Maintenance Aspect: The complex structure means that more components are likely to malfunction. The internal cooling pipes, vibration devices, etc. need to be regularly inspected and maintained. If problems such as blockage or leakage occur in the cooling pipes, the repair work will be rather complicated. For example, when the cooling pipes are blocked, professional equipment and techniques are required to unclog them, and it may be necessary to disassemble some parts of the mold, which will increase the repair time and cost.

High Requirements for Operation and Process Control

 

Operation Complexity: During the continuous casting process, the operation of the slab mold requires precise control of multiple parameters. For example, the adjustment of vibration parameters (such as frequency and amplitude) demands that the operators possess rich experience and professional knowledge. If the vibration parameters are not set properly, the shell may adhere to the mold wall, affecting the surface quality of the casting blank. Moreover, under different conditions such as different steel grades and casting speeds, the optimal values of the vibration parameters also vary, which increases the complexity of the operation.

 

Process Sensitivity: The slab mold is highly sensitive to changes in continuous casting process parameters (such as casting speed and cooling intensity). A slight change in the casting speed may affect the solidification quality of the shell. If the casting speed is too fast, the shell may not have time to solidify and will be torn. Unreasonable adjustment of the cooling intensity will also lead to problems such as uneven internal structure of the casting blank. Therefore, strict control of process parameters is required during the production process, which imposes high requirements on the stability and precision of the production process.

 

Challenges in Cooling Uniformity

 

Difference between Edge and Center: Although the cooling system of the slab mold is designed to ensure uniform cooling of the molten steel over a large area, in actual production, it is still difficult to completely eliminate the difference in cooling speed between the edge and the center. The edge part has a relatively fast cooling speed because it is in direct contact with the cooling wall, while the heat transfer in the center part is relatively slow. This non-uniform cooling may cause stress inside the casting blank, which may then lead to defects such as cracks, affecting the product quality.

 

Difference in the Width Direction: For wider slab molds, non-uniform cooling may also occur in the width direction. Especially in the two side edges and the middle part of the mold, due to the different distributions of cooling water flow and heat conduction paths, a temperature gradient may be generated. This requires continuous optimization of the layout of the cooling pipes and the adjustment of cooling parameters during the design and operation of the cooling system to minimize this difference, but it is still quite difficult to completely eliminate it.
