Impurity control has the following important impacts on the toughness and welding performance of high-strength steel:
I. Impact on toughness
Reduce crack propagation resistance: When the impurity content in high-strength steel is relatively high, microscopic defects such as inclusions and segregation will form in the steel. These defects will become the source of crack initiation and propagation, reducing the crack propagation resistance of the steel and thus decreasing the toughness of the steel. For example, impurity elements such as sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P) will form brittle inclusions, which are prone to cause cracks and reduce the toughness of the steel when under stress.
Affect grain structure: Impurity elements will also affect the grain structure of high-strength steel. Some impurity elements will promote grain growth and make the grains become coarse, thereby reducing the toughness of the steel. By strictly controlling the impurity content, the grains can be refined and the toughness of the steel can be improved. For example, elements such as aluminum (Al) and titanium (Ti) can form fine nitrides and carbides to inhibit grain growth and thus improve the toughness of the steel.
Change phase transformation behavior: Impurity elements can also change the phase transformation behavior of high-strength steel and affect the structure and properties of the steel. For example, elements such as carbon (C) and manganese (Mn) will affect the martensite transformation temperature and transformation speed of the steel, thereby affecting the strength and toughness of the steel. II. Impact on welding performance
Generate welding cracks: Impurity elements in high-strength steel will have adverse effects during the welding process and increase the sensitivity of welding cracks. For example, impurity elements such as sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P) will reduce the melting point of the steel, causing segregation in the weld metal during solidification and forming low-melting-point eutectics, increasing the risk of welding cracks. In addition, hydrogen (H) element will also enter the steel during welding, forming hydrogen-induced cracks and reducing the welding performance of the steel.
Affect the performance of the heat-affected zone: During the welding process, the heat-affected zone of high-strength steel will be affected by high temperatures, resulting in changes in structure and performance. Impurity elements will affect the organizational transformation and performance of the heat-affected zone and reduce the welding performance of the steel. For example, elements such as carbon (C) and manganese (Mn) will increase the hardness of the heat-affected zone, making the steel prone to cold cracks after welding. By strictly controlling the impurity content, the hardness of the heat-affected zone can be reduced and the welding performance of the steel can be improved.
Reduce the toughness of weld metal: Impurity elements will also reduce the toughness of weld metal and affect the performance of welded joints. For example, impurity elements such as oxygen (O) and nitrogen (N) will form oxide and nitride inclusions in the weld metal, reducing the toughness and plasticity of the weld metal.
