The chemical compositions of different shipbuilding steel plates mainly have the following differences:

 

I. Carbon (C) Content

 

For general-strength shipbuilding steel plates such as A, B, D, and E, the carbon content is relatively high. The carbon content of grade A ship plates is ≤0.21%. As the strength grade increases, the carbon content of high-strength ship plates such as AH32, DH32, EH32, AH36, DH36, EH36, AH40, DH40, and EH40 is reduced to ≤0.18%. A lower carbon content helps improve the welding performance and toughness of the steel plate while ensuring a certain strength.

 

II. Silicon (Si) Content

 

The silicon content of grade A ship plates is ≤0.50%. The silicon content of grade B, D, and E ship plates is also ≤0.35% or ≤0.50%, which is the same as that of high-strength ship plates such as AH32, DH32, EH32, AH36, DH36, EH36, AH40, DH40, and EH40. Silicon mainly plays a role in deoxidizing and increasing the strength of steel. However, if the content is too high, it may affect the welding performance and toughness.

 

III. Manganese (Mn) Content

 

The manganese content of grade A ship plates is related to the carbon content and is required to be ≥2.5C, with a relatively large variation range. The manganese content of grade B ship plates is 0.8 - 1.2%. The manganese content of grade D and E ship plates is 0.6 - 1.2% and 0.7 - 1.2%, respectively. The manganese content of high-strength ship plates is 0.9 - 1.6%. Manganese can increase the strength and toughness of steel, but if the content is too high, it will also affect the welding performance.

 

IV. Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S) Content

 

Different types of shipbuilding steel plates have relatively strict requirements for the content of phosphorus and sulfur, both being ≤0.035%. Phosphorus and sulfur are impurity elements in steel, which will reduce the toughness and welding performance of steel and increase the brittleness of steel. Therefore, their contents need to be strictly controlled.

 

V. Aluminum (Als) Content

 

There is no specific requirement for aluminum content in grade A and B ship plates. However, grade D, E, and high-strength ship plates such as AH32, DH32, EH32, AH36, DH36, EH36, AH40, DH40, and EH40 require an aluminum content of ≥0.015%. Aluminum mainly plays a role in deoxidizing and refining grains in steel, improving the toughness and welding performance of steel.
