Basic Overview
Standard: Belongs to Japanese industrial standards, specifically specified in JIS G3106 (Rolled Steels for Welded Structure).
Category: Classified as a low-alloy steel, it contains a small amount of alloying elements (such as manganese, silicon, and trace amounts of niobium, vanadium) to enhance strength while maintaining good weldability and formability.
Primary Use: Designed for welded structural components, making it suitable for construction machinery, bridges, buildings, pressure vessels, and shipbuilding.
Mechanical Properties
Yield Strength (YS): ≥325 MPa (for thickness ≤16mm; slightly lower for thicker plates, e.g., ≥295 MPa for 16-40mm)
Tensile Strength (TS): 490-610 MPa
Elongation: ≥21% (ensures good ductility for forming)
Impact Toughness: Adequate toughness at room temperature; can be optimized via heat treatment (e.g., normalizing) for low-temperature applications.
Hardness: Typically 150-200 HBW (after normalizing)



Heat Treatment
Normalizing: Commonly used to refine grains, eliminate internal stress, and improve uniformity. The process involves heating to 880-940°C (above Ac3), holding for sufficient time, and air-cooling. This results in a fine ferrite-pearlite structure, balancing strength and toughness.
Annealing: Rarely used unless better machinability is required (lowers hardness but reduces strength).
Welding Heat Treatment: Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) may be performed to relieve residual stresses in thick-walled components.
