Cracking During Bending/Shearing

Cause: High yield strength increases resistance to plastic deformation; sharp corners or high strain rates may induce stress concentration and cracking.

Work Hardening

Cause: Cold working (e.g., bending, rolling) can increase hardness and reduce ductility, making subsequent processing difficult.

Solutions

Optimize Bending Radius

Use a minimum bending radius of 2–3 times the plate thickness to reduce strain concentration.

Preheat Before Cold Working

Preheat the local area to 100–150°C to improve ductility and reduce cracking risk.

Avoid Excessive Deformation

Perform multi-step forming instead of single-pass heavy deformation to distribute stress gradually.

Tool Wear in Machining

Cause: High hardness of Q690 (especially in normalized or tempered states) accelerates wear on cutting tools (e.g., drills, milling cutters).

Heat Generation During Cutting

Solutions

Use High-Quality Cutting Tools

Employ carbide or coated HSS (high-speed steel) tools with sharp edges to minimize friction.

Cooling and Lubrication

Apply water-based or oil-based coolants during machining to reduce heat and improve tool life.

Plasma/Laser Cutting for Thick Plates
