Hammer Peening

Principle: Hammer peening is a relatively traditional method of eliminating welding stress. Appropriate tools (such as pneumatic hammers, hand hammers, etc.) are used to regularly hammer the welding area. The impact force generated by hammering will cause local plastic deformation of the welded metal, resulting in the redistribution of residual stress. Under the effect of multiple hammering, the welding stress peak will gradually decrease, achieving the purpose of stress elimination.

 

 

 

Operation Process: After welding, use appropriate hammering tools to start from one side of the welded joint and hammer with a uniform force and rhythm. The hammering force should be moderate to avoid damaging the weld. For LR/FH40 steel, the impact force of the generally used pneumatic hammer is between 5 - 15 N. The hammering spacing and number of times are determined according to factors such as the length and thickness of the weld. For example, for a thicker weld, the hammering spacing can be between 3 - 5 mm, and each point is hammered 3 - 5 times.

Advantages: Hammer peening tools are simple, and the operation is convenient and can be directly carried out at the welding site. Moreover, this method can eliminate local welding stress for specific parts of the weld, has high flexibility, and is very effective for eliminating local welding stress of some complex - shaped or large - scale components.
