Products Description
The classification of steel quality grades has a crucial impact on the safety of ship structures, and the details are as follows:
I. In terms of strength
Guarantee of yield strength and tensile strength
Steels of different quality grades have different yield strength and tensile strength indicators. For example, the yield strength of marine steel AH36 is not less than 355 MPa, and its tensile strength is between 490 - 620 MPa. While the yield strength of ABS - A grade hot-rolled mild shipbuilding steel plate is generally around 235 MPa, and its tensile strength is between 400 - 490 MPa. In ship structures, the hull shell needs to withstand external forces such as seawater pressure and wave impact force. High-strength grade steels can better resist these external forces and prevent excessive deformation or even fracture of the ship structure. For large ships or those sailing in harsh sea conditions, using high-grade steels can ensure that the ship's hull can maintain its structural integrity when subjected to huge tensile and bending stresses.
In the key parts of a ship, such as the keel, bow, and stern, which bear relatively large loads, using high-quality grade and high-strength steels is the key to ensuring ship safety. These parts are like the load-bearing walls of a building, and the strength of the steel directly determines the ship's deformation resistance ability in wind and waves.
Prevention of overload damage
The steel quality grade defines its strength range, and ship designers can reasonably select steel according to factors such as the type, size, and sailing environment of the ship. If the selected steel has insufficient strength grade, when the ship is loaded with cargo exceeding the designed load or encounters extreme sea conditions, the ship structure may be damaged because it cannot withstand excessive stress. For example, when a bulk carrier transports high-density cargoes such as ores, if the strength of the hull steel is insufficient, it may lead to the deformation of the deck or bulkhead under the weight of the cargo, and even cracks may appear, causing serious safety accidents such as seawater backflow.
II. In terms of toughness
Guarantee of impact toughness
High-quality grade steels usually have better impact toughness. Taking marine steel as an example, the Charpy V-notch impact energy of AH36 steel is generally required to be not less than 34 J at -20 °C. This good low-temperature impact toughness can ensure that when the ship sails in cold sea areas, the steel will not undergo brittle fracture due to sudden and strong impacts such as wave impact or ice collision. For ships that often sail in polar sea areas or high-latitude cold regions, using high-toughness quality grade steels is essential.
During the ship's voyage, it is inevitable to encounter various unexpected impact situations, such as collisions with floating objects and collisions when docking. Steels with good toughness can absorb these impact energies and buffer the impact force through plastic deformation instead of breaking directly like brittle materials, thus ensuring the safety of the ship structure.
Fatigue resistance
The steel quality grade is also related to fatigue resistance. During the long-term voyage of a ship, the ship structure will be subjected to the action of alternating loads, such as the periodic impact of waves. High-quality grade steels, due to their good toughness and internal structure, can better resist the generation and propagation of fatigue cracks. If the fatigue resistance of steel is poor, with the increase of sailing time, fatigue cracks may continuously develop at the stress concentration parts of the ship structure (such as welding joints, around holes, etc.), and eventually lead to structural fracture.

III. In terms of welding and processing performance
Guarantee of welding quality
Different steel quality grades have different welding properties. High-quality grade marine steels usually have good weldability and can ensure the quality of welded joints. In the shipbuilding process, welding is a key process for splicing various steel plates into a ship structure. If the welding performance of steel is poor, defects such as pores, slag inclusions, and cracks are likely to appear at the welded joints, and these defects will become weak links in the ship structure, reducing the overall strength and tightness of the ship's hull. For example, in the construction of oil tankers, poor welding quality may lead to oil tank leakage, causing serious consequences such as fires or marine pollution.
Appropriate steel quality grades can ensure good compatibility between steel and welding materials during the welding process, and after welding, the mechanical properties of the joints can be similar to those of the base metal, so that the ship structure can also maintain good strength and toughness at the welded parts.
