I. Definition and Overview
Cold Rolled Steel Coil
Cold rolling is a steel processing technique. Under normal temperature conditions, the steel (usually in the form of steel coils) after hot rolling is further rolled by a cold rolling mill. During the cold rolling process, the steel undergoes plastic deformation under the pressure of the rolls, and its thickness can be precisely controlled to a smaller size, and the surface quality is significantly improved. The thickness of cold-rolled steel coils is generally relatively thin, usually ranging from 0.1 mm to 3 mm.
Cold-rolled steel coils have high dimensional accuracy, and their thickness tolerance can be controlled within a very narrow range, which gives them an advantage in construction applications with high requirements for dimensional accuracy. Meanwhile, due to cold working hardening after cold rolling, the strength and hardness of the steel are increased compared to the hot-rolled state.
For Construction Material
As a construction material, cold-rolled steel coils have a variety of uses. They can be used to manufacture some components in building structures, such as light steel keels. Light steel keels are important supporting structures for separating walls and ceilings in buildings. In addition, cold-rolled steel coils can also be used to manufacture door and window frames, building decorative panels, etc. In these applications, the high strength, good surface quality, and dimensional accuracy of cold-rolled steel coils can meet the requirements of architectural design and functions.
II. Chemical Composition and Performance Characteristics
Chemical Composition
The main chemical components include carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), etc. The carbon content is generally between 0.05% and 0.15%. Carbon is a key element that affects the strength of steel, and an appropriate carbon content can enable the steel to obtain good strength and processing performance after cold rolling. The silicon content is approximately between 0.05% and 0.30%. Silicon can improve the strength and antioxidant properties of steel. The manganese content is between 0.20% and 0.50%. Manganese can enhance the toughness of steel and, to some extent, improve the cold working performance of steel.
Phosphorus and sulfur are impurity elements. In cold-rolled steel coils for construction, the phosphorus content generally does not exceed 0.04%. Excessive phosphorus will increase the cold brittleness of steel. The sulfur content does not exceed 0.04%. High sulfur content will cause the hot brittleness of steel.
Performance Characteristics
Mechanical Properties
Yield Strength: The yield strength is generally between 180 MPa and 300 MPa. Yield strength is the stress at which the steel begins to have obvious plastic deformation. This performance indicator is very important for building structural components because it determines the load at which the components will undergo irreversible deformation.
Tensile Strength: The tensile strength is usually between 270 MPa and 420 MPa. Tensile strength reflects the ability of steel to resist tensile fracture. When building structures are subjected to tensile forces, such as when buildings are affected by wind loads or seismic forces, it ensures that the structures will not break due to excessive tensile forces.
Elongation: The elongation is not less than 20%. Elongation is an indicator for measuring the plastic deformation ability of steel. A higher elongation means that the steel has better toughness during the deformation process under force and can absorb more energy to avoid sudden fracture, which is of great significance for the safety of building structures when they are subjected to accidental impacts.
Surface Properties
Cold-rolled steel coils have high surface quality and a smooth surface. This is because during the cold rolling process, the rolls conduct fine processing on the surface of the steel, resulting in a low surface roughness. The smooth surface enables cold-rolled steel coils to have a good appearance effect when used in building decoration and makes it easier to carry out subsequent surface treatments such as painting.
Processing Properties
Stamping Performance: It has good stamping performance and can be conveniently made into various shapes of building components through the stamping process. For example, when manufacturing door and window frames, its good stamping performance can be utilized to stamp the steel coils into the required shapes and sizes.
Bending Performance: The bending performance is also relatively excellent. When manufacturing building components that require bending processing, such as light steel keels, bending operations can be easily carried out, and there will be no cracks or other defects during the bending process.
III. Application Fields and Manufacturing Processes
Application Fields
Light Steel Building Structures: In light steel housing construction, cold-rolled steel coils are the main materials for manufacturing light steel keels. Light steel keels can form the frames of the walls and ceilings of houses. Due to the high strength and light weight of cold-rolled steel coils, light steel building structures have good seismic performance and space utilization.
Building Doors and Windows: They are used to manufacture door and window frames. Their high strength can provide good support, and at the same time, the smooth surface and good processing performance are conducive to the installation and sealing of doors and windows. Moreover, cold-rolled steel coils can be made into door and window frames of various shapes and sizes according to different architectural styles and design requirements.
Building Decoration: As the raw material for building decorative panels, it has high surface quality and can be decorated by means of painting, film pasting, etc. to make decorative panels with different appearance effects, which are used for interior and exterior wall decoration and ceiling decoration of buildings.
Manufacturing Processes
PPGI Coil Size: 1000*0.18-1000*1.9mm
PPGI Coil Thickness: 0.18-1.9mm

Hot Rolling Pretreatment: First, the steel undergoes the hot rolling process to make hot-rolled steel coils. During the hot rolling process, the steel billet is heated to a high temperature (generally between 1000 °C and 1200 °C) and then rolled by a rolling mill to a certain thickness, which is usually thicker than the final thickness after cold rolling.
Cold Rolling Processing: The hot-rolled steel coils are pickled to remove the oxide scale on the surface and then enter the cold rolling mill for rolling at normal temperature. The cold rolling mill continuously rolls the steel coils through multiple pairs of rolls, and the gap between each pair of rolls gradually decreases, so that the thickness of the steel coils becomes thinner continuously. During the rolling process, parameters such as rolling force and rolling speed need to be precisely controlled to ensure the thickness accuracy and surface quality of the steel coils.
Post-treatment: The cold-rolled steel coils need to undergo annealing treatment to eliminate the work hardening generated during the cold rolling process and restore the toughness of the steel. The annealing temperature is generally between 500 °C and 700 °C, and the time depends on factors such as the thickness and material of the steel coils. After that, a leveling treatment is also carried out to further improve the surface quality and straightness of the steel coils.
