I. Tensile strength
As the thickness of ship plates increases, the tensile strength may show a similar change trend as the yield strength. Within a certain range, thicker ship plates may have relatively higher tensile strength. This is because under specific circumstances, the internal structure of thicker plates may be more compact, which helps to withstand greater tensile forces. However, when the thickness exceeds a certain limit, due to increased internal defects and uneven cooling, the tensile strength may no longer increase or even decrease.
II. Toughness
Thinner ship plates usually show better toughness in low-temperature environments. This is because thinner ship plates cool more evenly during the cooling process, and the internal structure is finer, enabling them to better resist brittle fracture at low temperatures. Thicker ship plates are more prone to brittle fracture at low temperatures because there may be larger stress concentration and uneven structures inside.
When subjected to impact, thinner ship plates can better absorb energy and alleviate the impact through plastic deformation, showing better impact resistance. Thicker ship plates may experience local rupture or fracture when impacted due to their greater rigidity, but through reasonable design and strengthening measures, their impact resistance can also be improved.

III. Welding performance
Thinner ship plates are usually easier to weld, and the welding quality is also easier to control. Thinner steel plates heat up and cool down quickly during the welding process, and the structure of the welded joint is more uniform, with fewer welding defects (such as pores, cracks, etc.).
Thicker ship plates require higher welding temperatures and longer welding times during welding, and problems such as deformation and cracks are prone to occur during the welding process. After welding, the strength and toughness of the welded joint of thicker ship plates may be lower than that of the base metal, and appropriate heat treatment or other strengthening measures are needed to improve the performance of the welded joint.
IV. Hardness
Generally speaking, thicker ship plates may have uneven hardness during the cooling process. Especially in the case of large thickness, there may be hardness differences between the surface and the interior of the ship plate. Thinner ship plates are relatively easier to achieve a uniform hardness distribution.
V. Fatigue performance
Thinner ship plates may exhibit better fatigue performance when subjected to alternating loads. Because during the stress cycle process, the stress distribution of thinner ship plates is relatively more uniform, and local stress concentration is not easy to occur. Thicker ship plates may be more prone to the generation and expansion of fatigue cracks in some parts due to internal defects or uneven structures.
