Hot Rolled St37-2 A36 Mild Carbon Steel Plate

There are mainly the following differences between St37-2 and A36 materials:

 

I. Chemical composition

 

Carbon content:

 

The carbon content of St37-2 is relatively low, generally below 0.17%. The lower carbon content makes the steel have better welding performance and toughness.

The carbon content of A36 is slightly higher, about 0.25%. The higher carbon content will increase the strength of the steel to a certain extent, but it may have a certain impact on the welding performance and toughness.

 

Manganese content:

 

The manganese content in St37-2 is usually between 0.40% and 1.20%. Manganese element helps to improve the strength and toughness of steel.

The manganese content of A36 is also in a similar range, but it may be slightly different. The specific manganese content will vary depending on the manufacturer and production process.

 

Other elements:

 

Both materials also contain a small amount of elements such as silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus. The content of these elements will also affect the performance of steel.

For example, too high content of sulfur and phosphorus will reduce the toughness and welding performance of steel. St37-2 and A36 usually strictly control the content of sulfur and phosphorus to ensure the quality of steel.

 

II. Mechanical properties

 

Strength:

 

The yield strength of A36 is generally around 250 MPa, and the tensile strength is between 400 and 550 MPa.

The yield strength of St37-2 is relatively low, about 235 MPa, and the tensile strength is between 360 and 510 MPa.

 

Toughness:

 

Due to the lower carbon content, St37-2 usually has better toughness, especially in low-temperature environments. It can resist impact and fracture to a certain extent.

The toughness of A36 is also good, but it may be slightly inferior to St37-2. In some applications with high toughness requirements, St37-2 may have more advantages.

 

 

III. Uses

 

Building structures:

 

A36 is widely used in building structures such as steel beams, steel columns, and steel plates. Its strength and toughness can meet the requirements of most building structures.

St37-2 can also be used in building structures, but in some occasions with high requirements for welding performance and toughness, such as bridges and high-rise buildings, it may be more popular.
