Effect of Tempering on Microstructure and Hardness

Tempering is a heat - treatment process that is carried out after hardening (such as quenching) to relieve internal stresses and modify the microstructure of the steel. For AH40 and DH40 steel plates, tempering can have a significant impact on hardness.

When these steel plates are quenched (if they are hardened first), a martensitic microstructure is usually formed, which is very hard and brittle. Tempering involves reheating the steel to a temperature below the austenitizing temperature (generally in the range of 550 - 650°C for these types of shipbuilding steels). During tempering, the carbon atoms in the supersaturated martensite begin to diffuse and form carbide particles.

As a result, the hardness of the AH40 and DH40 steel plates decreases after tempering compared to the as - quenched state. The extent of the hardness decrease depends on the tempering temperature and time. A higher tempering temperature and longer tempering time generally lead to a greater reduction in hardness.

Impact on Mechanical Properties and Applications

The change in hardness due to tempering also affects other mechanical properties. While the hardness decreases, the toughness and ductility of the AH40 and DH40 steel plates increase. This is beneficial for applications such as shipbuilding, where a balance between strength and toughness is required.

In shipbuilding, the tempered AH40 and DH40 steel plates with reduced hardness but improved toughness can better withstand the dynamic loads and impacts that ships experience during operation. For example, they can better resist the impact of waves and the stress caused by the movement of cargo and equipment.

The tempered steel is also more suitable for machining and forming processes. The decreased hardness makes it easier to cut, bend, or shape the steel plates during the fabrication of ship components, which helps to improve the manufacturing efficiency and quality.
