Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: It has a tensile strength in the range of 440 - 570 MPa. This property is crucial for withstanding the tensile forces that occur during the ship's operation, including the dynamic stresses from waves and the ship's movement.

Elongation: Typically, it has an elongation percentage that indicates its ductility. A reasonable elongation value (e.g., around 22% in a 50mm gauge length) allows the steel to deform plastically before failure, which is important for absorbing energy in case of impacts or sudden loads.

Impact Resistance: The steel is designed to have good impact resistance, especially at low temperatures. This is vital for ships operating in cold waters, as it ensures that the material does not become brittle and fail under impact from ice or cold waves.

 

Chemical Composition

 

Carbon (C): The carbon content is usually limited to ensure good weldability and prevent excessive brittleness. It is typically around 0.18% or less.

Manganese (Mn): Manganese is added in a certain proportion (e.g., around 0.9 - 1.6%) to enhance the strength and toughness of the steel.

Silicon (Si): Silicon is present in small amounts (e.g., 0.1 - 0.5%) to improve the deoxidation process during steelmaking and contribute to the overall mechanical properties.

Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S): The contents of phosphorus and sulfur are strictly controlled to very low levels (e.g., P ≤ 0.035% and S ≤ 0.035%) as they can have a detrimental effect on the steel's ductility and toughness.
