The precision of wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) in the preparation of EBSD samples has the following characteristics:

 

High Dimensional Precision
Wire electrical discharge machining can achieve a relatively high cutting precision. Generally, a relatively small cutting gap can be obtained, usually around 0.1 - 0.3 mm. This smaller cutting gap is beneficial for controlling the sample size, can meet the precision requirements of EBSD analysis, ensure the accuracy of the sample size, and reduce the impact on the micro - structure around the sample.

 

Good Shape Precision
It can cut samples with complex shapes. The electrode wire can flexibly move along the preset path, thus being able to meet the preparation requirements of EBSD samples with curves, angles, or special contours. For some EBSD research samples with requirements for irregular geometric shapes, such as metal components with fine internal structures or non - standard exteriors, wire electrical discharge machining can well achieve their shape precision.

 

High - Precision Maintenance of Micro - structure
Wire electrical discharge machining is a non - contact machining process. During the cutting process, there is no mechanical cutting force between the electrode wire and the workpiece, reducing the mechanical damage to the sample and being conducive to maintaining the integrity of the sample's micro - structure. This, in turn, provides more accurate micro - structure information for EBSD analysis. Especially for some samples with high requirements for micro - structure precision, such as EBSD samples used to study the micro - structures such as internal grain boundaries and twins in materials, this high - precision maintenance ability of the micro - structure is particularly important.
