Controlling the Atmosphere

 

Principle: During the heating process of steel, the surrounding atmosphere has a significant impact on decarburization. By controlling the atmosphere inside the heating furnace, decarburization can be effectively prevented. For example, a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen () or carbon monoxide () can be used. These gases can prevent the carbon in the steel from reacting with oxygen. When the oxygen content in the furnace atmosphere is extremely low, the carbon oxidation (decarburization) reaction is difficult to occur.

 

Application Case: In the bright annealing process, hydrogen is used as a protective atmosphere. Hydrogen can react with the oxygen that may exist on the steel surface to form water, thus avoiding decarburization during the annealing process and keeping the steel surface bright. It is often used for some precision steel components with high - surface - quality requirements.

 

Using a Vacuum Environment

 

Principle: In a vacuum environment, the oxygen content is extremely low, and there are almost no oxidizing substances that can react with the carbon in the steel.
