Effect on Mechanical Properties

Strength:
Decarburization reduces the carbon content on the surface of steel. Generally speaking, carbon is an important strengthening element for steel strength. As the carbon content decreases, the strength of the steel surface will decline. For example, after a decarburization process, a low - carbon "soft layer" may form on the surface of the steel. For some steel components that bear tensile, bending and other loads, this soft layer may become a weak link and may deform under a relatively small external force.
However, for some steels that require subsequent processing (such as cold stamping), a moderate decarburization can reduce the surface hardness, which is beneficial to the processing and forming and improves the forming quality. For example, in automobile manufacturing, after appropriate decarburization of the steel for some vehicle body parts, cracks and other defects are less likely to occur during the stamping process.

Toughness:
The decarburization process may change the microstructure of the steel, thus affecting its toughness. If decarburization causes the formation of a coarse ferrite structure on the surface of the steel, the toughness of the steel will be improved. This is because ferrite itself has relatively good toughness. However, if the decarburization process is not properly controlled, some defects (such as micro - cracks) may be produced or the distribution of other alloy elements may be changed, which may reduce the toughness of the steel.
For some steels used in low - temperature environments, such as the steel for polar ships, the effect of decarburization on toughness is more critical. If decarburization causes the toughness of the steel to decrease, the steel is more likely to have brittle fracture at low temperatures, thus bringing safety risks.

Hardness:
Decarburization will reduce the surface hardness of the steel. This is because the reduction of carbon content leads to a decrease in the amount of carbides, and carbides are one of the main factors for improving the hardness of steel. In some application scenarios that require wear - resistance, such as the surface of mechanical parts, if decarburization occurs, the wear - resistance performance will decline.
However, in some cases, such as for steels that require cutting processing, reducing the surface hardness can improve the cutting performance and reduce tool wear.

Effect on Corrosion Resistance
Under normal circumstances, decarburization will change the surface microstructure of the steel and form a relatively iron - rich surface layer. This surface layer may form a more stable oxide film in some corrosive environments, thus improving the corrosion resistance of the steel. For example, in some weakly - acidic environments, after decarburization, the ferrite content on the surface of the steel increases, and a dense iron oxide protective film can be formed more quickly, slowing down the corrosion process.
However, if decarburization causes the formation of a loose or non - uniform structure on the surface of the steel, it may make the corrosive medium more likely to penetrate into the interior of the steel and reduce the corrosion resistance. For example, in a corrosive environment containing chloride ions (such as a marine environment), if the surface structure of the decarburized steel is damaged, chloride ions can more easily penetrate into the interior of the steel and accelerate the corrosion of the steel.
