Effects of chromium (Cr) element

 

Forming an oxide film

 

Chromium can react with oxygen in shipbuilding steel plates to form a dense chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) protective film. This film is tightly attached to the surface of the steel plate and can effectively prevent corrosive media such as seawater, oxygen, and corrosive ions from directly contacting the interior of the steel plate. For example, in a seawater environment, this protective film can significantly reduce the erosion rate of chloride ions (Cl⁻) on the steel plate. Chloride ions are one of the main factors causing the corrosion of steel materials.

Quenching

Not applicable for normal use. Generally, AH36 marine steel plate is not quenched.

Effects of nickel (Ni) element

 

Stabilizing the organizational structure

 

Nickel can make the crystal structure of shipbuilding steel plates more stable. In the microscopic structure of the steel plate, nickel can be evenly distributed in ferrite and pearlite, reducing crystal defects and the permeation and diffusion rate of corrosive media at the crystal interface. For example, in a low - temperature environment, nickel can inhibit the occurrence of martensitic transformation inside the steel plate and avoid the cracking of grain boundaries caused by the internal stress generated by the phase transformation, thereby improving the comprehensive performance of the steel plate in a low - temperature and corrosive environment.

 

Promoting the passivation effect

 

Nickel helps to promote the passivation of the surface of shipbuilding steel plates. In an oxidizing environment, nickel can cooperate with elements such as iron and chromium to form a more stable passive film on the surface of the steel plate. This passive film can not only prevent the intrusion of corrosive media, but also can quickly self - repair when it is locally damaged.
