Precipitation Strengthening Effect

 

Manganese can combine with elements such as carbon in steel to form carbides and other compounds. In the microstructure of steel, these compounds will precipitate inside the grains or at the grain boundaries. When the steel is subjected to external forces, these precipitates act like "obstacles" or "support points". For example, during the stretching process, they can impede the deformation of grains and prevent the movement of dislocations, thereby further increasing the strength of the steel. This strengthening method is different from solid - solution strengthening. Solid - solution strengthening mainly hinders the movement of dislocations by causing lattice distortion through atoms in the lattice, while precipitation strengthening physically obstructs the grain deformation through precipitates.

 

To use a simple analogy, if the grains are regarded as small rooms and dislocations are small creatures moving in the rooms, then the manganese compounds precipitated inside the grains are like some fixed obstacles placed in the rooms. From a microstructure perspective, the smaller the grains, the larger the grain - boundary area. Grain boundaries are like "checkpoints" that can impede the movement of dislocations. When the steel is subjected to external forces, dislocations will be hindered at the grain boundaries and more energy will be required to continue moving, which is equivalent to increasing the strength of the steel. For example, imagine a structure composed of many small cubes (grains).
