Products Description
To prevent the undercut defect during the welding process, the following aspects can be considered:
I. Welding Parameter Adjustment
Welding Current: Reasonable control of the welding current is crucial. Excessive current is one of the common causes of undercut. When the current is too large, the heat of the electric arc is concentrated, and the temperature of the molten pool is too high, which causes the base metal at the edge of the weld to melt too quickly, and the filler metal cannot fill in time, thus forming an undercut. Therefore, before welding, it is necessary to determine a suitable welding current range through the welding procedure qualification test according to factors such as the thickness and material of the welded parts and the welding method used. For example, when manual arc welding is used to weld low - carbon steel thin plates (with a thickness of less than 3mm), the welding current is generally controlled between 60 - 90A to avoid undercut caused by excessive current.
Arc Length: Maintaining an appropriate arc length is also very important. If the arc is too long, the heat of the arc will be dispersed, and the blowing force of the arc will increase, which will cause the molten pool metal to be blown towards the center of the weld. After the edge of the base metal is melted, it cannot be filled in time, thus resulting in an undercut. For different welding methods, the appropriate arc length is different. For example, in manual arc welding, the normal arc length is generally 0.5 - 1 times the diameter of the electrode; in gas - shielded welding, the arc length should be kept between 2 - 4mm as much as possible to ensure the stability of the welding process and reduce the possibility of undercut.
II. Welder's Operation Technique
Electrode Manipulation Method: The correct electrode manipulation method is crucial for preventing undercut. The welder should select an appropriate electrode manipulation method according to the position, shape, and size of the weld. For example, when flat welding is carried out, the straight - line electrode manipulation or the small - amplitude swing electrode manipulation can be used to evenly distribute the weld metal and avoid undercut formation at the edge of the weld. When welding fillet welds, the zig - zag or crescent - shaped electrode manipulation method is adopted, and the swing amplitude and speed of the electrode are well - controlled so that the molten metal can fully fill the edge of the weld. At the same time, during the electrode manipulation process, the correct angle of the electrode should be ensured so that the electric arc can evenly heat the edge and the center of the weld.

III. Welded - part Preparation
Groove Design and Cleaning: Reasonable design of the groove shape and size can provide favorable conditions for welding. For example, for thick - plate welding, an appropriate V - shaped or U - shaped groove is adopted, and the groove angle and the root face size should meet the requirements of the welding process. If the groove angle is too small or the root face is too thick, it may lead to difficulty in root filling during welding and easily cause undercut at the edge of the weld. Before welding, the groove and its nearby areas should also be thoroughly cleaned to remove impurities such as oil, rust, and oxide scale. These impurities will affect the stability of the electric arc and the fluidity of the molten pool and increase the risk of undercut. The cleaning methods can include mechanical grinding, sandblasting, or chemical cleaning.
Assembly Quality of Welded Parts: Ensuring the assembly quality of the welded parts is also helpful for preventing undercut. The gap between the welded parts should be uniform and meet the welding process regulations. If the gap is too large, too much filler metal will be used during welding, which is likely to cause the weld metal to flow and lead to undercut; if the gap is too small, it may lead to insufficient root penetration. When adjusting the welding parameters to ensure penetration, undercut may also be caused. At the same time, the welded parts should be assembled firmly to avoid displacement during the welding process and affect the welding quality.
