GL - F460 steel will bear dead loads (such as the weight of its own structure, fixed equipment, etc.) and live loads (such as the weight generated by human activities, movable furniture, etc.) in building structures. If the usage function of a building changes, causing the actual load to exceed the designed load range, the steel will be in an overloaded state for a long time, which will accelerate the deformation and fatigue damage of the steel. For example, if a building space originally designed as an ordinary office is transformed into a warehouse to store a large number of heavy goods, the load borne by GL - F460 steel components will increase significantly.
Under the action of long-term sustained loads, the crystal structure inside the steel will gradually change. At the micro level, crystal defects such as dislocations will accumulate continuously, leading to a decrease in the strength and toughness of the steel. Generally, when the sustained load reaches a certain proportion (such as 70% - 80%) of the yield strength of the steel, after a long period (several years to decades), the steel may show obvious performance degradation.
Alternating Loads and Impact Loads

Impact loads are also an important factor affecting the service life of steel. For example, in the case of earthquakes, explosions, or accidental impacts by heavy objects, GL - F460 steel will instantaneously bear a huge impact force. This impact force may cause dents, local deformations on the steel surface, and even cracks inside the steel. If the impact energy is large enough, a single impact may cause irreparable damage to the steel, seriously affecting its service life.

In the processing links such as cutting, welding, and drilling of steel, if the process does not meet the standards, it will have an adverse impact on the performance of GL - F460 steel. For example, during the welding process, if the welding parameters (such as current, voltage, welding speed, etc.) are not properly selected, defects such as pores, slag inclusions, and incomplete fusion may occur at the weld seam. These welding defects will become stress concentration points. Under the action of loads, the stress will be magnified sharply at these defects, accelerating the destruction process of the steel.
If proper cooling measures are not taken during cutting and drilling operations, the steel may be locally overheated, causing changes in the metallographic structure of the steel and resulting in a deterioration of the local performance of the steel. For example, the hardness in the overheated area may increase abnormally while the toughness decreases, thus affecting the overall service life of the steel.
Construction and Installation Quality
During the construction process of a building, the installation accuracy of GL - F460 steel components also has an important impact on their service life. If the installation position of the components is inaccurate, it will lead to uneven stress distribution in the structure. For example, if the connection nodes of beams and columns are not aligned, when bearing loads, additional bending moments will be generated at the nodes, causing the steel to bear excessive stress in local areas and accelerating the damage of the steel.
Maintenance and Repair Measures
Execution of Regular Inspection Plans
For building structures using GL - F460 steel, regular inspection is the key to detecting potential problems. If the inspection is not carried out according to the specified time intervals and inspection contents, some early steel damages (such as tiny cracks, local corrosion, etc.) may not be detected in time. For example, an annual visual inspection should be carried out to check whether there are rust marks, deformations, etc. on the steel surface, and a non-destructive inspection (such as ultrasonic inspection, magnetic powder inspection, etc.) should be carried out every 3 - 5 years to check internal defects. If these inspections are ignored, small problems may gradually develop into serious structural safety hazards.
