A higher external force is required to enable the dislocations to continue moving, thus increasing the strength of the steel. For example, compared with the GL - F690 steel with coarse grains, the yield strength of the steel with fine grains may be increased by about 10 - 20%.

 

Toughness Aspect

 

Grain refinement has a significant improvement effect on the toughness of GL - F690 steel. Grain boundaries are obstacles to crack propagation. Fine - grained steel has more grain boundaries. When a crack propagates in the material, it will change direction or stop propagating when it encounters a grain boundary. This hindering effect of grain boundaries on cracks enables the material to absorb more energy during the fracture process, thereby improving toughness. Generally speaking, the impact toughness of GL - F690 steel after grain refinement can be increased by 30 - 50%. Corrosion Resistance Aspect

 

Grain refinement also has a certain positive impact on the corrosion resistance of GL - F690 steel. The grain boundary structure of fine - grained steel is relatively more compact and can prevent the intrusion of corrosive media (such as acid, alkali, and salt solutions). At the same time, due to the irregular arrangement of atoms at the grain boundaries, some microscopic structures that are beneficial to improving corrosion resistance may be formed. For example, the passive film formed at the grain boundaries may be more continuous and dense. However, this effect is more complex compared with mechanical properties such as strength and toughness and is also affected by alloy elements in the steel, environmental media, and other factors.
