Here are some methods to increase the hardness of GL (Germanischer Lloyd) shipbuilding steel plate grade EH36:
I. Heat treatment methods
Quenching:
Heat the EH36 steel to a certain high temperature (usually between 850°C - 950°C) to fully austenitize its structure.
Then quickly immerse it in a cooling medium (such as water, oil, etc.) for rapid cooling. This will transform the steel's structure into martensite, which has high hardness and strength. Quenching can significantly increase the hardness of EH36 steel, but at the same time, it may also make the steel brittle, so subsequent tempering treatment is needed to reduce brittleness.
For example, in some specific industrial applications, the hardness of EH36 steel after quenching can be increased from about 200HBW (Brinell hardness) to more than 400HBW.
Tempering:
Perform tempering treatment after quenching. That is, heat the steel to a lower temperature (usually between 500°C - 650°C), and then cool it after maintaining for a certain period of time. Tempering can reduce the brittleness of quenched steel and at the same time improve its toughness and plasticity. To a certain extent, tempering can also adjust the hardness of the steel to reach the required hardness range.
For example, if it is necessary to adjust the hardness of EH36 steel to 300 - 350HBW, an appropriate tempering temperature and time can be selected for treatment.
II. Cold working methods
Cold rolling:
Perform cold rolling processing on EH36 steel, that is, make the steel pass through rollers for compression deformation at room temperature. Cold rolling can refine the grains of the steel and make the structure more compact, thereby increasing the hardness of the steel.
However, cold rolling will reduce the plasticity of the steel. Therefore, it is necessary to control the deformation amount of cold rolling to avoid excessive hardening of the steel and causing cracking and other problems.
For example, the hardness of EH36 steel after appropriate cold rolling treatment can be increased by about 20 - 50HBW.
Cold drawing:
Cold drawing is to stretch the steel through a die to reduce the diameter and increase the length of the steel. Cold drawing can further refine the grains of the steel and improve the hardness and strength of the steel.
Similar to cold rolling, cold drawing also needs to control the deformation amount to prevent defects in the steel.
For example, the hardness of EH36 steel after cold drawing can be increased by about 30 - 60HBW.

III. Alloying methods
Adding carbon element:
Increasing the carbon content in EH36 steel can increase the hardness of the steel. Carbon can form hard and brittle iron carbide (Fe3C) with iron, thereby increasing the hardness of the steel. However, too high a carbon content will reduce the toughness and weldability of the steel, so the carbon content needs to be controlled within a certain range.
For example, increasing the carbon content of EH36 steel from about 0.18% to about 0.25% can increase the hardness of the steel by about 30 - 50HBW.
Adding alloying elements:
Adding some alloying elements such as manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), etc. to EH36 steel can increase the hardness and strength of the steel. These alloying elements can form solid solutions or carbides to enhance the lattice strength of the steel and thereby increase the hardness of the steel.
For example, adding an appropriate amount of manganese can increase the hardness of EH36 steel by about 20 - 40HBW; adding chromium and molybdenum can increase the hardness of the steel by about 40 - 80HBW.
