Temperature Parameters

 

Low - Temperature Aging (100 - 150℃)

 

In this temperature range, atomic diffusion is relatively slow, which is beneficial for the formation of a large number of fine precipitate nuclei. For example, during aging at 120℃, alloying elements (such as copper, niobium, etc.) begin to aggregate and form atomic clusters in the steel matrix. These clusters serve as nuclei for subsequent precipitates and can effectively impede dislocation movement. However, the effect of aging strengthening at this temperature appears relatively slowly, and it may take a long time (such as 30 - 50 hours) to significantly increase the yield strength.

 

Medium - Temperature Aging (150 - 250℃)

 

This is a commonly used aging temperature range. Taking 200℃ as an example, at this temperature, the atomic diffusion rate is moderate, and the precipitates can grow within an appropriate time. For KD32 steel, aging at 200℃ for about 10 - 20 hours can form precipitates with a relatively uniform size, such as carbides and nitrides. These precipitates can effectively pin dislocations, significantly increasing the yield strength and tensile strength of the steel, while having a relatively small impact on toughness and plasticity.

 

High - Temperature Aging (250 - 350℃)

 

High temperature accelerates atomic diffusion, and the precipitates grow rapidly. During aging at 300℃, the precipitates can grow to a certain size in a short time (such as 5 - 10 hours). However, an excessively high temperature is likely to cause the precipitates to grow and coarsen excessively and may even lead to over - aging. Nevertheless, if the time can be precisely controlled, a relatively high strength improvement can also be obtained in this temperature range, although there may be some damage to the toughness.

Multi - stage Aging Parameters

 

Two - step Aging (Low - Temperature First, Then High - Temperature)

 

It is possible to first age at 120 - 150℃ for 10 - 20 hours to form a large number of fine precipitate nuclei in the steel. Then, age at 250 - 300℃ for 3 - 6 hours to allow these nuclei to quickly grow into precipitates of an appropriate size. This two - step aging process can comprehensively utilize the advantages of low - temperature and high - temperature aging. It can not only obtain fine precipitates to impede dislocation movement but also enable the precipitates to grow rapidly through the high - temperature stage, thereby effectively increasing the yield strength and tensile strength of the steel, with relatively little damage to the toughness.

 

Three - step Aging (Low - Temperature - Medium - Temperature - High - Temperature)

 

For example, first age at 100℃ for 10 hours, then age at 200℃ for 10 hours, and finally age at 300℃ for 5 hours. This multi - stage aging process can more precisely control the formation and growth process of the precipitates, optimizing the precipitates at different temperature stages. The nuclei are formed at the low - temperature stage, the precipitates grow evenly at the medium - temperature stage, and the size and distribution are adjusted at the high - temperature stage, so that the performance of KD32 steel can be better optimized in terms of strength and toughness.
