Mechanical Property Changes

 

Yield Strength Improvement: After the KD36 steel plate undergoes aging treatment, the precipitates (such as carbides, nitrides, etc.) during the aging process will impede dislocation movement. It's like setting a lot of obstacles on a road, and the dislocations need to overcome greater resistance to move. For example, under suitable aging conditions, the yield strength can be significantly enhanced, enabling the material to better withstand external forces without obvious plastic deformation. This is of great importance for the safety of structures such as ships.

 

Tensile Strength Change: The tensile strength may also change. Generally, with the refinement of the microstructure and the precipitation strengthening effect during the aging process, the tensile strength will increase. However, if the aging time is too long or the temperature is not properly controlled, resulting in excessive growth of precipitates or coarsening of the microstructure, the tensile strength may decrease.

 

Toughness and Ductility Changes: The aging treatment has a complex impact on toughness and ductility. In the early stage of aging, due to the dispersed distribution of precipitates, the toughness and ductility of the material may slightly decrease because the precipitates limit the movement of dislocations to some extent, making the material more prone to fracture during deformation. However, if the aging process is properly controlled so that the precipitates are evenly distributed and of appropriate size, the toughness and ductility can be maintained to a certain extent, and in some cases, the toughness may even be improved.

Physical Property Changes

 

 

Coefficient of Thermal Expansion Change: The coefficient of thermal expansion of the KD36 steel plate may also change due to the aging treatment. The bonding mode between the newly - formed precipitates and the matrix and their different thermal expansion characteristics will lead to a change in the behavior of the material when it is heated and expands. In some applications with high requirements for dimensional accuracy, such as precision mechanical structures, this change in the coefficient of thermal expansion needs to be considered.

 

Corrosion Resistance Change: The change in the microstructure after the aging treatment will affect the corrosion resistance of the KD36 steel plate. If the aging process enables the formation of a dense oxide film on the material surface or changes the chemical composition of the surface, it may improve the corrosion resistance. For example, some alloy elements are enriched on the surface during the aging process to form a protective film, preventing the corrosive medium from contacting the base metal. On the contrary, if the aging leads to defects in the microstructure, such as non - uniform distribution of precipitates at the grain boundaries, it may reduce the corrosion resistance because these defect locations are prone to be the starting points of corrosion.
