Initial Stage of the Aging Process (After the Formation of Supersaturated Solid Solution)
Solute Atom Aggregation: After quenching to obtain a supersaturated solid solution, the solute atoms are in an unstable high - energy state in the alloy matrix. As time passes, the solute atoms begin to aggregate spontaneously and form some atomic clusters. These atomic clusters are relatively small in size and have not yet formed complete precipitates, but they have already begun to have a certain impact on the surrounding lattice, causing a slight increase in the local lattice distortion.
The Degree of Dislocation Movement Obstruction Begins to Rise: At this time, when dislocations pass through these atomic cluster regions, they will be hindered to a certain extent. Because the existence of atomic clusters changes the local atomic arrangement and stress state, the movement of dislocation lines is no longer as smooth as in a uniform solid solution. However, this hindering effect is relatively weak, and the increase in the material's yield strength is relatively small.
Intermediate Stage of the Aging Process (Precipitate Nucleation)
Formation of Precipitate Nuclei: As the solute atoms further aggregate, when the atomic clusters reach a certain size and concentration, they will become the nuclei of precipitates. The formation of these nuclei is a crucial step. They are like "seeds", providing a basis for the subsequent growth of precipitates. The composition and structure of the precipitate nuclei are similar to those of the final precipitates, but their size is still small.
Enhanced Interaction between Dislocations and Precipitate Nuclei: When dislocations encounter precipitate nuclei during movement, they need to bypass or cut through them to continue moving. Due to the existence of precipitate nuclei, the path of dislocation movement becomes more tortuous, and the energy required for dislocation movement increases. At this time, the material's yield strength begins to increase significantly because the dislocation movement is strongly hindered.

Later Stage of the Aging Process (Precipitate Growth)
Precipitate Growth and Coarsening: After the formation of precipitate nuclei, the surrounding solute atoms will continuously diffuse onto the nuclei, causing the precipitates to grow gradually. As time passes, the size of the precipitates continuously increases, and some smaller precipitates may coalesce, resulting in a decrease in the number of precipitates but an increase in their size. This process is called precipitate coarsening.
The Dislocation Movement Resistance May Decrease after Reaching a High Value: When the precipitates grow to a certain extent, the dislocation movement resistance reaches a relatively high value. However, if the precipitates grow excessively, dislocations may find an easier path to bypass the precipitates, causing the material's yield strength to slightly decrease after reaching a peak. Nevertheless, under appropriate aging conditions, the size and distribution of precipitates can be maintained in an optimal state, so that the material's yield strength remains at a high level.
