When inspecting and maintaining welding tools to ensure uniform heat input, the following specific details need to be noted:
Welding Cable
Connection Firmness Check:
Ensure that the connections between the welding cable and the welding power source and the welding pliers (or welding gun) are firm. A loose connection will increase the resistance. According to Joule's law (where is heat, is resistance, and is time), excessive heat will be generated when current passes through, and this heat will mainly concentrate at the connection site, resulting in uneven heat input at the welding site. Regularly check whether there are signs of looseness at the cable connection terminals. If looseness is found, tighten them in time.
Check the connection method between the cable and the workpiece. In some welding processes, the cable needs to be connected to the workpiece as a circuit. This connection point also needs to ensure good contact; otherwise, it will affect the stability of the current circuit and lead to uneven heat distribution.
Cable Condition Check:
Check whether the cable has damage, aging, or other conditions. A damaged cable may cause partial current leakage, reducing the effective current passing through the welding site. Moreover, abnormal heat may be generated around the leakage point, affecting the uniform input of heat. An aging cable has reduced insulation performance, which will also increase safety risks and affect welding quality. If cracks or severe wear are found on the cable sheath, the cable should be replaced in time.
Welding Pliers (or Welding Gun)
Conductive Nozzle Inspection and Replacement (for Welding Guns):
For gas shielded welding guns, the conductive nozzle is a key component. Check whether the inner diameter of the conductive nozzle matches the diameter of the welding wire. If the inner diameter of the conductive nozzle is too large, the contact position of the welding wire inside the conductive nozzle will be unstable, resulting in uneven current transmission and thus uneven heat input. For example, when using a welding wire with a diameter of 1.0mm, the inner diameter of the conductive nozzle should be between 1.0 - 1.2mm.
Regularly clean the splashes inside the conductive nozzle. Splashes will increase the resistance between the welding wire and the conductive nozzle, generate additional heat, and affect the feeding speed and stability of the welding wire, ultimately resulting in uneven welding heat. Generally, the conductive nozzle should be cleaned once after welding a certain length of weld seam (for example, after continuously welding 2 - 3 meters).

Clamp Inspection (for Welding Pliers):
For manual arc welding pliers, check the clamping force of the welding electrode clamp. If the clamping force is insufficient, the welding electrode may become loose during the welding process, making the arc length unstable. Changes in the arc length will lead to changes in the welding voltage and current because the arc voltage is proportional to the arc length, thus causing uneven heat input.
Check the conductivity of the clamp. If there is an oxide layer or dirt on the surface of the clamp, it will increase the resistance and cause uneven heating of the welding electrode. The surface of the clamp should be cleaned regularly to maintain good conductivity.
