Manufacturing Process

Steelmaking

The process begins with the selection of raw materials, including iron ore, coke, and scrap steel. These are melted in a furnace, such as a blast furnace or an electric furnace. During the melting process, impurities are removed and the chemical composition is adjusted by adding alloying elements. The molten steel is then refined in a secondary refining furnace to ensure a high quality and homogeneous composition.

Hot Rolling

After steelmaking, the steel is cast into billets. These billets are reheated in a heating furnace to a suitable temperature, usually around 1000 - 1250 °C. The reheated billets are then passed through a series of rolling mills. In the case of flat bulb bars, special rolling techniques are used to shape the billets into the characteristic flat bulb shape. The rolling process is carefully controlled to achieve the desired dimensions and mechanical properties.

Applications in Shipbuilding

Frame Construction

Flat bulb bars are widely used in the construction of ship frames. They form the skeletal structure of the ship, providing support and rigidity. The unique shape of the flat bulb bar allows for efficient load distribution and helps in withstanding the various forces acting on the ship, such as hydrostatic pressure, wave impacts, and the weight of the cargo.

Stiffening Members

They are also used as stiffening members in ship hulls and decks. By attaching flat bulb bars to the plates, the overall strength and stability of the structure are enhanced. This helps in preventing deformation and buckling of the plates under load. In areas where there are concentrated loads or high stress concentrations, flat bulb bars are strategically placed to provide additional support.
