Mechanical Properties

4130's properties can be adjusted through heat treatment (e.g., annealing, normalizing, quenching, and tempering). Typical mechanical properties (in the heat-treated condition) include:

 

Tensile strength: 655–965 MPa (95,000–140,000 psi)

Yield strength: 448–827 MPa (65,000–120,000 psi)

Elongation (in 2 inches): 15–25%

Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is critical to optimize 4130's performance:

 

Annealing: Relieves internal stress and softens the material. Typically done at 815–870°C (1500–1600°F), followed by slow cooling.

Normalizing: Improves uniformity in microstructure. Conducted at 870–925°C (1600–1700°F), then air-cooled.

Quenching and Tempering: Achieves high strength and toughness. Quench from 870–900°C (1600–1650°F) in water or oil, then temper at 205–650°C (400–1200°F) depending on desired hardness/ductility balance.
