II. Core Advantages of Corrosion Resistance

1. Exceptional Resistance to Chloride Corrosion

Pitting & Crevice Corrosion Resistance:
With a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN) of ~40 (PREN = Cr + 3.3×Mo + 16×N), 904L outperforms conventional stainless steels (e.g., 316L) in chloride (Cl⁻)-containing media:

Maintains stable passive film in seawater (Cl⁻ ≈ 19,000 mg/L), brine, and chlorinated chemicals, resisting pitting formation.

Ideal for seawater treatment equipment, salt mine pipelines, and chlorinated organic production units.

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance:
High nickel content enhances resistance to Cl⁻-induced SCC, enabling service in moderate Cl⁻ concentrations (≤200 mg/L), better than 316L (≤100 mg/L) but slightly inferior to 645SMo.

2. Broad Resistance to Acidic Media

Dilute Sulfuric & Phosphoric Acids:
Outperforms 316L in ≤5% sulfuric acid and ≤85% phosphoric acid, suitable for:

Sulfuric acid pickling equipment and reaction vessels in phosphate fertilizer production.

Organic Acids & Mixed Acids:
Tolerates organic acids (formic, acetic) and acidic media with trace Cl⁻ (e.g., hydrometallurgical solutions), widely used in food processing, pharmaceuticals, and chemical synthesis.

Limitations:
