One of the primary considerations when welding corten steel is the selection of the appropriate welding process. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) are commonly used methods. The choice depends on factors such as the thickness of the steel, the joint configuration, and the production requirements.

Before welding, it is essential to thoroughly clean the surfaces to be joined. Remove any dirt, oil, rust, or paint to ensure good weld quality. Corten steel forms a protective oxide layer on its surface, which needs to be ground or wire brushed in the weld area to expose clean metal for proper fusion.

Post-weld treatment can enhance the performance of the weld joint. Stress relief annealing may be necessary to reduce residual stresses that can lead to cracking over time. This treatment helps improve the ductility and toughness of the weld.

In addition, proper protection from the atmosphere is necessary during welding. Shielding gases, such as argon or a mixture of gases, are often used in GMAW and GTAW to prevent oxidation and contamination of the weld pool.

Weld inspection is an essential step to verify the quality of the weld. Visual inspection, radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, or other non-destructive testing methods can be employed to detect any defects such as cracks, porosity, or incomplete fusion.
