The following non-destructive testing methods can be used to detect internal defects in CCSB steel plates:

 

Ultrasonic Testing (UT): This is one of the most common and effective methods for detecting internal defects in steel plates. Ultrasonic waves are transmitted into the steel plate, and when they encounter internal defects such as cracks, inclusions, or delaminations, the waves are reflected, refracted, or scattered. By analyzing the received ultrasonic signals, the location, size, and type of internal defects can be determined. It is suitable for detecting various internal defects in medium and thick steel plates3.

Radiographic Testing (RT): X-rays or gamma rays are used in this method. The rays pass through the steel plate, and the differences in the absorption of rays by different parts of the plate (such as areas with defects and sound areas) result in different intensities of rays reaching the detector. This forms an image that can be used to identify internal defects like voids, inclusions, and cracks. However, this method has certain limitations in terms of safety and cost, and it is not suitable for detecting thin steel plates3.

Eddy Current Testing (ET): It is mainly used to detect surface and near-surface defects in conductive materials. Although it is not as effective as the above two methods in detecting internal defects in steel plates, it can still detect some internal defects that affect the conductivity or magnetic permeability of the material to a certain extent, such as internal cracks or corrosion in metal materials3.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): This method is suitable for detecting surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. By magnetizing the steel plate and applying magnetic particles, the defects will cause leakage of the magnetic field, attracting the magnetic particles and forming visible magnetic traces, which can indicate the presence and location of defects. However, it is not very effective in detecting internal defects deep inside the steel plate3.

During Processing:

 

Material inspection:

Before processing, carefully inspect the CCSB steel plates for any visible defects such as cracks, laminations, or surface irregularities. Use non-destructive testing methods if necessary to detect internal defects.

Verify that the steel plates conform to the specified chemical composition and mechanical properties by checking the mill certificates and conducting random sampling tests.

Cutting and shaping:

Use appropriate cutting methods such as plasma cutting, laser cutting, or oxy-fuel cutting. Ensure that the cutting parameters are optimized to minimize heat-affected zones and avoid excessive hardening or distortion.

When shaping the plates through bending or rolling, use proper tools and techniques to ensure accurate dimensions and smooth surfaces. Avoid over-bending or under-bending, which can lead to stress concentration and reduced structural integrity.

Surface preparation:

Clean the steel plates thoroughly before processing to remove rust, scale, oil, and other contaminants. This can be done through mechanical cleaning methods such as sandblasting or grinding, or chemical cleaning methods.

Ensure that the surface roughness is within the specified range to promote good adhesion of coatings and welding materials.

 

During Welding:

 

Welding procedure specification:

Develop a detailed welding procedure specification (WPS) based on the specific requirements of the CCSB steel plates and the application. The WPS should include information on welding methods, electrode types, welding parameters, preheating and post-welding heat treatment requirements, and inspection procedures.
