Water Quality Composition: The water quality composition of inland rivers is different from that of seawater. It is generally a freshwater environment but may contain sediment, organic matter, dissolved minerals, and so on. If the river water contains a large amount of acidic substances (such as the acid rain components in some polluted rivers), it will reduce the pH value of the river water, thereby accelerating the corrosion of the steel. On the contrary, if the river water is weakly alkaline and the mineral content is moderate, the corrosiveness to the steel may be relatively small.

 

Water Flow Velocity: The water flow velocity also affects the corrosion of steel. A higher water flow velocity can continuously update the electrolyte solution on the steel surface, making it easier for corrosive media such as oxygen to reach the steel surface, which may accelerate corrosion. However, if the water flow velocity is too fast, it may wash away the corrosion products already formed on the steel surface, slowing down the corrosion to a certain extent. Nevertheless, this scouring effect may also damage the protective coating on the steel surface, making the steel more susceptible to corrosion.

Load Conditions Related to Ship Type and Purpose

 

Freight Ships: Bulk carriers frequently experience friction and collision between the cargo (such as coal and ore) and the ship's hull steel during loading and unloading. These physical effects will wear away the protective layer on the steel surface, directly exposing the steel to the environment and easily triggering corrosion. Moreover, the accumulation of a large amount of cargo will cause the ship's hull to bear huge static pressure, which may lead to local deformation of the steel, changing the stress distribution inside the steel and reducing the steel's corrosion resistance. For container ships, the concentrated stacking of containers will generate large concentrated loads on the deck and hold bottom, which may cause local yielding and fatigue damage to the steel. Especially during the ship's voyage, the containers' swaying with the waves will continuously apply dynamic loads to the ship's hull, accelerating the damage to the steel.

 

Passenger Ships: Passenger ships mainly focus on passenger comfort and safety. Although the load during the voyage of a passenger ship is relatively stable, frequent passenger movement and the operation of on - board equipment will also produce a certain amount of vibration and slight impact. These factors may lead to tiny deformations and fatigue damage to the steel, especially in the connection parts and structurally complex areas of the ship. If these factors are not fully considered during the design and construction process, the accumulated effect over a long period may affect the service life of the steel.
