Another NDT method frequently employed is Magnetic Particle Testing (MT). In this procedure, the steel plate is first magnetized using a direct current or alternating current magnetic field. A magnetic powder or liquid is then applied to the surface.
If there are any surface or near-surface defects, the magnetic field lines will be distorted, causing the magnetic particles to accumulate at the defect locations, forming visible indications. The MT is particularly effective in detecting surface cracks and discontinuities.
During the MT process, the strength and direction of the magnetic field, as well as the type and concentration of the magnetic particles, are carefully controlled to ensure sensitive and accurate detection. The size and shape of the indications are evaluated against the acceptance criteria.
