Products Description
General strength CCS (China Classification Society) marine steel plates of grade A, B, D, and E are widely used in shipyards for shipbuilding purposes. Here is a detailed introduction about them:
1. Standards and Specifications
These steel plates comply with the relevant standards and regulations set by the China Classification Society. CCS has strict requirements regarding their chemical composition, mechanical properties, manufacturing processes, and quality inspection to ensure the safety and reliability of ships constructed using these materials.
2. Chemical Composition
Grade A:
Carbon (C) content is usually around 0.21% maximum.
Silicon (Si) content is generally within 0.35% maximum.
Manganese (Mn) content is typically in the range of 0.60% - 1.20%.
Phosphorus (P) content is limited to 0.035% maximum.
Sulfur (S) content is restricted to 0.035% maximum.
Grade B:
Similar to Grade A in many aspects, but with more specific adjustments in some elements to meet its required performance. For example, the carbon content is also controlled within a certain range to ensure proper strength and weldability.
Grade D:
It has a more stringent control on impurities. The sulfur and phosphorus contents are often lower than those of Grades A and B. For instance, the sulfur content might be limited to around 0.025% maximum to enhance its toughness, especially in low-temperature conditions.
Grade E:
This grade has the strictest requirements on chemical composition among them. The sulfur content is usually further reduced, typically to around 0.020% maximum, and the phosphorus content is also carefully controlled. Additionally, it may contain certain alloying elements in appropriate amounts to improve its low-temperature impact toughness.
3. Mechanical Properties
Yield Strength:
Grade A: The minimum yield strength is around 235 MPa.
Grade B: Also has a minimum yield strength of approximately 235 MPa.
Grade D: The minimum yield strength is typically 235 MPa as well.
Grade E: Its minimum yield strength is about 235 MPa.
Elongation:
They usually have an elongation percentage requirement to ensure the steel's ductility. Generally, the elongation after fracture should be no less than 22% (depending on the specific testing method and specimen dimensions).
Impact Properties:
Grade A: Usually does not have specific requirements for low-temperature impact tests under normal circumstances.
Grade B: It needs to pass the impact test at 0 °C. The impact energy absorbed should meet the specified values according to the relevant standards.
Grade D: Must pass the impact test at -20 °C with the required minimum impact energy.
Grade E: Has to pass the impact test at -40 °C, and the impact energy must reach the corresponding standard values to ensure good low-temperature toughness.
4. Product Advantages
Adequate Strength: With appropriate yield and tensile strengths, they can bear the loads and stresses that ships experience during normal operation and in various sea conditions.
Low-Temperature Toughness: Grades D and E, in particular, exhibit excellent low-temperature toughness, which is crucial for ships sailing in cold sea areas to prevent brittle fractures.
5. Application Fields
Hull Construction: They are mainly used for constructing the hulls of various ships, including cargo ships, fishing boats, and small to medium-sized passenger ships.
Internal Structures: Also applied in the fabrication of internal structural components within the ship, such as bulkheads, decks, and frames.

6. Common Specification Sizes
Thickness: Typically ranges from a few millimeters to around 50 mm. For example, common thicknesses used in shipyards might be 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, etc.
Width: Generally between 1000 mm and 3000 mm.
Length: Can be customized according to the actual needs of shipbuilding projects, usually in lengths of several meters to tens of meters.
7. Surface Treatment
The surface of these steel plates may be in the as-rolled state or undergo further treatments like shot blasting to remove rust and improve the surface quality for better paint adhesion and corrosion resistance before being used in ship construction.
8. Packaging and Transportation
Packaging: Usually packaged with anti-corrosion materials such as plastic film or waterproof paper to protect them from moisture and rust during storage and transportation.
Transportation: They can be transported by land (trucks) or sea (shipping) depending on the distance and specific requirements. The packaging is designed to ensure the steel plates remain in good condition throughout the transportation process.
