Process Parameters of Tempering Treatment
Cooling Method: The cooling method after tempering is also very important. Air - cooling or furnace - cooling methods are usually adopted. The air - cooling speed is relatively fast and is suitable for situations where the toughness requirement is not extremely high and a certain strength is desired to be maintained; furnace - cooling is a relatively slow cooling method, which is more conducive to reducing internal stresses and improving toughness, but may cause the steel microstructure to become coarser, so an appropriate cooling method needs to be selected according to specific performance requirements.
Influence of Tempering Treatment on the Microstructure of Shipbuilding Steel Plates
Precipitation and Aggregation of Carbides: During the tempering process, precipitation and aggregation of carbides occur in the steel. When the tempering temperature rises, the supersaturated carbon precipitates from martensite, forming fine carbide particles. These carbide particles are initially fine and dispersed, and as the tempering time is extended, they will gradually aggregate and grow. The precipitation and aggregation process of carbides will affect the strength and toughness of the shipbuilding steel plates. For example, appropriate carbide precipitation can play a role in dispersion strengthening and improve the strength of the steel; while excessive aggregation may lead to a decrease in strength and an increase in toughness.
Decomposition of Martensite: Tempering treatment also leads to the decomposition of martensite. Martensite is a structure with relatively high hardness but relatively low toughness. During the tempering process, martensite gradually decomposes into a mixture of ferrite and carbides, making the microstructure of the steel more uniform and stable. This decomposition process can effectively reduce the hardness of the steel, improve toughness, and reduce internal stresses, thereby improving the comprehensive performance of the shipbuilding steel plates.

Performance Changes after Tempering Treatment
Mechanical Properties: After tempering treatment, the yield strength and tensile strength of the shipbuilding steel plates may slightly decrease, but the elongation and impact toughness will significantly increase. For example, the yield strength of the shipbuilding steel plates without tempering treatment may be about 300MPa, and it may decrease to about 280MPa after tempering, but the impact toughness can increase from 30J/cm² to more than 40J/cm². These performance changes make the shipbuilding steel plates more suitable for ship structures and better able to withstand various complex loads and impacts faced by ships during voyages.
Machinability: The machinability of the shipbuilding steel plates after tempering treatment is improved. The hardness is reduced, making cutting, welding and other machining operations easier. For example, during ship construction, when using the tempered shipbuilding steel plates for welding, due to the reduced hardness, the possibility of crack generation during welding is also reduced, and the quality of the welded joints is also easier to ensure.
