I. Material Characteristics

635 is a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium (Cr-Mo-V) alloy steel renowned for:

 

High Toughness: Resists fracture under impact loading.

Excellent Wear Resistance: Suitable for components subject to friction (e.g., dies, cutting tools).

Good Hardenability: Achieves uniform hardness through the cross-section during quenching.

Dimensional Stability in Heat Treatment: Minimizes distortion during annealing or hardening.

Superior Polishability: Forms a smooth surface finish, ideal for precision molds.

Good Weldability: Can be welded with proper preheating and post-weld heat treatment.

Suitability for Flame and High-Frequency Induction Hardening: Enables localized hardening for targeted wear resistance.

III. As-Received Condition

Hardness: Soft annealed to approximately 200 HB.

Identification Color: White with purple tints.

IV. Heat Treatment Processes

1. Soft Annealing

Purpose: Reduce hardness and improve machinability.

Procedure:

Heat in a protective atmosphere to 860°C and soak for 2 hours.

Cool in the furnace at 20°C/h to 770°C.
