Heat Treatment Systems and Processes for TC4 Titanium Alloy Steel Plates

I. Classification of Basic Heat Treatment Processes

The heat treatment systems for TC4 titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) primarily include the following categories, which adjust the microstructure and properties by controlling temperature, holding time, and cooling rate:

 

Annealing

Purpose: Eliminate stress, improve machinability, and stabilize the microstructure.

Process Types:

Stress Relief Annealing: 600–650°C × 1–4h, air cooling (for eliminating stresses from cold working or welding).

Full Annealing: 700–750°C × 1–2h, air cooling (to obtain a uniform α+β microstructure and reduce hardness).

Dual Annealing: High-temperature (750–800°C) short-term followed by low-temperature (550–650°C) long-term treatment to enhance fatigue resistance.

Solution Treatment

Purpose: Dissolve the β phase to form a supersaturated solid solution for subsequent aging strengthening.

Process Parameters:

Temperature: 900–950°C (α+β phase field) or 950–1000°C (β phase field).

Holding Time: 0.5–2h (depending on plate thickness).

Cooling Method: Water quenching (WQ) or oil quenching (OQ).

Aging Treatment

Purpose: Strengthen the matrix by precipitating fine α phase.

Process Parameters:

Temperature: 480–650°C (commonly 550°C).

Time: 4–24h (lower aging temperature requires longer time).
